Infinite Consortium, Tuesday

Sairis came by after class, still a bit confused about what ethics had to do with dirty transportation. (Though what did he know? He'd walked most everywhere, with the occasional dead steed.)

"Do you think the instructors know anything about ethics?" he asked the haunted armor. It just stood there, as usual when Liliana wasn't there.

"I miss Charles," Sairis sighed. The dragon skull hadn't usually spoken, either, but it felt like home.

As usual, there was a sign in the window: Charms and potions for sale! Get extra focus for exams!

Were exams here anything like what he'd seen at the university back home? Sairis had no idea. He was hoping. But anyway, the shop was open!

Ethics, Tuesday, April 14, 2026

Anakin and Ahsoka welcomed their class to a simulated version of a grimy spaceport. "Welcome."

"We can't teach you everything there is to know about ethics in one semester," Ahsoka said. "But hopefully we've given you a good start."

"Or, for those who have taken this a few times, more to think about," Anakin added. "Ahsoka, explain why we're here."

"While we've largely focused on helping you develop your own ethical framework, one aspect we haven't touched on as much is that having a solid grasp of ethics yourself will help you identify those with let's go with more flexible principles." In other words it helped you look out for people who were suss af.

"So, catch a ride with a stranger," Anakin said. "Make sure they're trustworthy!"

And not, say, Darth Maul.

Fandom Radio, Tuesday, April 14th

What up, Fandom? It's me, ya girl Arden Finch, and judging by the size of this pile of notes, boy do I have some news for you! Did somebody throw a party yesterday that I missed...?

*chittering*

Okay, actually, I have just been informed that this pile of notes are actually all the receipts for all the alcohol the squirrels have drunk for the past year. Wait. Y'all can claim that as a business expense? How does that work? How does any of this work? You're squirrels, why are you paying taxes?

You know, here I am, asking questions I know I don't want to know the answers to. So let's just go to this pile of...this page of notes.

In School, Squirrel! brainstormed an exam for class, Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques covered the five mother sauces--

*snickering*

--I'm not even going to ask what pervy thing y'all have decided that means, thank you. And in Tasks, people had to knock over a hundred cans with five--

*more snickering*

--throws. In five throws.

*chorus of disappointed groans*

Serves all of you right. Skipping over Dorms, we have a bit of activity in Town, with Mayor Faden doing paperwork and ordering radios at the Town Hall, and Professor James at the Clinic learned that the crab had gone surfing.

And that's all I got, so I'm out before the squirrels give me another reason to want to punt one of them into the wall. This is ya girl, Arden Finch, signing off, and leaving you with another great bop, esmerelda's I'm Not A Princess I'm A God. Bye, Fandom!

Feeding Yourself 101, Tuesday, First Period

There was an assortment of movie snacks on offer today, because the students would be watching a film! Less educational, more motivational, because hey, if a mouse could cook, so could you! Right?...right?

Caritas- Tuesday

Still no Tino. Still no zombie drummer. Now no Zombie Yoko. Kitty was officially concerned, and the rest of the band seemed tense, for zombies. It wasn't like they were great at expressing stuff.

And things had been so quiet that it was fine with just her at the bar, but it wasn't starting to feel weird. And Kitty was actually starting to miss his company, so she needed Tino back ASAP because that was gross.

Tasks!-Monday-3rd period

Today the simulations were set up with four individual towers of tin cans set up on a ledge a distance away from a red circle on the ground. There were five balls set up to throw, and there was a rope rigged to some of the cans. And then there was a task.

Knock over exactly 100 cans. You must throw all 5 balls, and pull the rope really hard. You must stay on the spot and you may not move the spot. No powers allowed. The closest to 100 cans wins.

Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques, period two

When the students got to the Danger Shop today, Hannibal nodded and waved them to the front.

"In traditional Western cuisine, there are five sauces which are referred to as the 'mother sauces'. Each of them can be used as a base for many other sauces, so once you learn them, you're well on your way to being able to make any number of things."

He had five dishes in front of him, and indicated them in turn; there were little spoons so they could each taste them.

"The first is Béchamel. It's the simplest; you don't need to prepare anything ahead of time. It starts with only milk, flour, and butter. The butter and flour you use to make a roux, as we did in an earlier class; then the roux thickens the milk and herbs and spices are added; salt and pepper, often clove, maybe onion. Many creamy or cheesy sauces start with Béchamel."

"Next is Velouté. Also fairly simple; instead of milk, you use some sort of stock - poultry, veal, fish, any meat that makes a light stock - which you would generally make ahead of time. Any spices would already be in the stock. You thicken the stock with the roux. Mushroom sauce and many seafood sauces are made from this. And don't worry," he told Arden, "this one uses veal."

"Espagnole is a brown sauce. It begins the same as the velouté, but with a darker stock, such as beef, and is a bit more complex. Once you have the stock, you add tomato puree and vegetables. Some mushroom and wine-based sauces use this, and it's often cooked together with more stock to make a demi-glace which is used in other sauces."

"The fourth is Hollandaise. It has only two basic ingredients - clarified butter and egg yolks. Herbs and lemon are often added. It is a permanent emulsion; like oil and vinegar, the butter and eggs would not normally mix, but when combined correctly, the sauce will not separate. There are a number of other sauces that use this as a base, but it's not uncommon to see it used on its own, either, particularly on vegetables."

"The last is tomato sauce. Which is not, generally speaking, what you'll find on a pizza," he noted, with a wry smile. "Vegetables are sautéed, traditionally in pork fat, then added to tomatoes, stock, and perhaps some further bones or meat, then it's cooked in the oven. Traditionally it's also thickened with a roux, although the tomatoes are often enough of a thickening agent."

Once they'd had a chance to try them all, he continued. "Today we'll be working through as many of these as you're able. I suggest you attempt them in this order; I'd rather you make a good béchamel than five lumpy sauces. If you should need help, please let me know."

Squirrel! Period one

"Right. Well, class is almost over, apparently. Next week is for exams." Jon frowned. "I'm not entirely certain what sort of exam to have in here, admittedly. But one thing that's supposed to help with focus is brainstorming ideas, in order to help you find something you enjoy. So today we're brainstorming ideas for an exam for this class. Best one probably wins. Unless Leroy shows up again, I suppose."

Town Hall, Monday

Jesse was fine, thank you. She hadn't seen James in a month, not since that disastrous birthday evening, and she didn't need to. There was enough happening in Fandom.

Enough paperwork.

And - even better - a brief, three-minute radio update from Emily from the Oldest House, where time still crawled. She was getting better at figuring out the right frequency sequences, she said. But the Hiss were still crawling around the building, and the Foundation was still--

Okay, basically, Jesse had other things she couldn't change to worry about.

"How are we on stocking up emergency supplies for another potential invasion?" she asked, looking up at her assistant. "... I'm thinking we should order more radios."

Fine.

Honestly, what is Mr. Stark doing, if he isn't going to host a ball then he could at least--oh, la, it's on. Good morning, everyone, it is I, Miss Lydia Bennet, once again made a liar by rodents and thus here to read you the news rather sooner than next Saturday.

A squirrel has just handed me one solitary scrap of paper, upon which is scribbled some intelligence from the town, where Mr. Karkaroth was at The Perk learning about space travel. Oh, yes, that's a thing now, I've been to space loads of times since I came to the future. Do you have anything else? No? Very well, then, until...whenever the squirrels waylay me once more! Farewell!

The case of the missing notifications

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

APPLICATIONS FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FOR SUMMER 2026!

Hello everyone! It's time again for applications!

To apply, read the following information, click the link to the application form, fill it out for the character you want to play, and send it off!

The basics you need to know )

* At this point, the school is now officially a collegiate setting. All student applications must be for college students or grad students.

* Teachers are required to teach at least one class/workshop per week, and be accessible to students when needed. This also applies for characters applying to teach an adult class at the Community Center, rather than one at the school.

* If you would like to apply for a new character to teach an adult workshop, fill out the Character Application exactly as if you were applying for a teacher, but mark it "Townie" instead. Note in the Course Description that it would be an adult workshop, not a student workshop. Because of the need to keep track of the adult workshops being offered and start them at the same time, these applications will be processed on the same schedule as student/teacher applications.

* Current townies or teachers can also apply to teach an adult workshop. If you would like to teach an adult workshop with a current character, you can fill out a limited application by following the instructions here.

* See this post for more about character activity.

* All accepted characters go on probation for the first month. After that time, if there's anyone who's disappeared or is causing problems, we'll talk to them about it and possibly discuss removal from the game. It's very difficult to get to the removal stage.

* Improvisation. Fandom High is a balance between planning and improvisation. Some people plan plots, but a lot of the day-to-day stuff is purely improvisation where you throw a bunch of characters together and see what happens.

What’s needed to apply )
Early applications )
What happens once you’ve applied )
Notes for Current Players )
Notes for New Players )

Application Form (This is a GDoc whose text you can paste into an e-mail or attach as a txt file, then send to us at fandomhighadmins dot iambicnut dot com.)

You only need to fill out the parts that are relevant to the type of character you are applying for (ie: if you're a student applicant, don't fill in the stuff marked 'Townies Only').

If you don't get a confirmation email from us within 24 hours, please email us!

Applications close Saturday, May 2nd at 11:59pm Eastern. The next application session for students and teachers after this will be for the Fall session in July!

Got a question? We're here to answer it!

Fandom Radio, Saturday, April 11

Good morning, everyone, it is I, Miss Lydia Bennet, here with all of yesterday's news the squirrels' little squirrely paws could be bothered to report. I do hope there's something juicy.

At the school, Overcoming Obstacles worked with invisible dogs, which does sound like it would be an obstacle to a great many things. Combat 101 watched a film about boxing, and Cupcakes of the World(s) learned about the cupcakes of Mexico.

I've no notes from the dormitory, so we shall move along to the town, where Mr. Henry of Skalitz, ah, dressed in accordance with the weather at the forge, whilst Miss Skywalker trained in the park, observed by Mr. Dooley, who had some questions about her magic laser sword thing, and Dean Skywalker, who hoped she was acting as a flamingo deterrent. And finally, at the Trooper Station, Detective Watts enjoyed a sandwich, and this counts as news. *disappointed sigh* I shall hope for better gossip next week, I suppose. Until then, dear listeners!

The Perk, Saturday

Sairis had decided to treat himself to some coffee - nothing fancy, just some time out of the room. But when he got there, he found that there was a board announcing something called a "splashdown special" which involved an awful lot of foam and something called "gummy fish".

Which led to him asking why. Which led to an explanation. And...the moon? That was somewhere you could actually go?

So now Sairis was sitting at a table with a frothy, fishy, very sugary drink and googling a lot about the history of the space program. It was a lot.

The weather was nice, and Rey didn't want to jinx anything but maybe it was staying that way? At any rate, it gave her an idea, and in the meantime she was enjoying the weather by doing lightsaber drills outside. She did t really need it, but she wanted to do it.

She let Anakin know where she was, found an open spot near a bench, and got to work.

“So, these are a bit different. They have cheese in them. Not cream cheese. Queso fresco. And they’re more like a bread pudding, if you’ve ever had that, than a traditional cupcake. No frosting, really, but there are sprinkles!”

Sprinkles were great, okay?

“Right. So. These are called Capirotada Cupcakes and they have a coffee liqueur crema. I do like coffee flavored things….but you may not and that’s fine if you don’t like these. You can try the ones I brought in.” Because of course there was a platter of them available for eating.

“Any thoughts on Mexico before we begin? Remember I’m happy to help if you need or want that.”
